Asset of the Month

Time at Home

Kids go out with friends “with nothing special to do” two or FEWER nights a week.

AT HOME - Make time at home fun for everyone. Spend time together doing things that everyone can enjoy. Play cards, plan a family movie night, read, take walks, work around the house together, ride bikes together. Make your home a place your kids want to be.

FOR THE KIDS - If your parents don’t limit the amount of time you can spend away from home, try setting your own limits. Focus more on your school work and your family, and see if your life changes in positive ways.

Asset of the Month

Family Support

Kids feel loved and supported in their family. A family that is loving and supportive, and a home that is a comfortable place to be.

AT HOME - Let your love for your kids show in the way you look at them, the words you say, your tone of voice and your body language.

FOR THE KIDS - Do your part to make your home and family warm, caring, comfortable, supportive, and fun. Be kind to your parents and siblings. Replace put-downs with affirmations, teasing with supporting, instead of thinking about “me” think about “we.” Treat your family the way you want them to treat you.

Asset of the Month

Kids accept and take personal responsibility for their actions and decisions.

AT HOME - Model responsibility in your daily life. When you make a commitment, follow through. When you can’t do something you should have, don’t make excuses. Talk with your child about how you plan to avoid getting into similar situations in the future.

FOR THE KIDS - Take responsibility for your own actions and choices. You missed the bus? Don’t blame Mom for not waking you up. Own it. You aced that math final! Own it. It is on you! The more responsibility you take, the stronger and more capable you’ll fell.

Asset of the Month

Positive Family Communication

Kids can turn to their parent, guardian, or family member for advice and support. They have frequent, in-depth conversations with each other on a variety of topics. Parents, guardians, and family members are approachable and available when kids need to talk.

AT HOME - When your kids talk, really listen. Accept the fact that you won’t agree on everything. Never label a child’s opinions, beliefs, feelings or experiences “silly,” “stupid,” “childish,” or “wrong.”

Ask your kids every day about what they are doing and thinking. Tell them about your day too. Form the habit of frequent conversation.

FOR THE KIDS - Keep the lines of communication open with your parents. For most parents, giving advice is an irresistible urge. You might try explaining that sometimes all you really need them to do is listen while you sort things out. It’s normal for kids and parents to disagree. Try to stay calm, cool, and collected. Meanwhile, make an effort to see your parents’ point of view.

Asset of the Month

Youth Programs

Kids spend three or more hours each week in sports, clubs, or organizations
at school and/or in the community.

AT HOME - Talk with your kids about their interests.
Help them to find teams, clubs, or organizations that match or complement their interests.
Encourage them to join one - and ask for a 6 month commitment.

FOR THE KIDS - Learn what sports, clubs and organizations your school and community offers. Ask a teacher, parent, pastor, or even form a group of your own. Get involved!
